WELL, A NORTH CAROLINA WOMAN HAS SPENT DECADES MAKING SURE NO VETERAN’S GRAVE IS FORGOTTEN. JAN MILLS HAS BEEN PLACING FLAGS ON VETERANS GRAVES FOR 30 YEARS, A TRADITION THAT STARTED WHEN SHE WAS A CUB SCOUT LEADER. ONE MEMORIAL DAY, MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION SAW HER WORKING ALONE AND OFFERED TO HELP. SINCE THEN, IT’S BECOME A FAMILY TRADITION. MILLS AND HER GRANDCHILDREN, ALONG WITH VOLUNTEERS, NOW VISIT MULTIPLE CEMETERIES, SEARCHING FOR GRAVES WITHOUT FLAGS AND MAKING SURE NO VETERAN IS LEFT BEHIND. I SAW CEMETERIES WHERE THERE WERE NO FLAGS VERSUS CEMETERIES WHERE THEY WERE FULL OF FLAGS, AND I STARTED DOING SMALL FAMILY CEMETERIES AND JUST GREW AND STARTED. THEN WE DO MORE. WE PUT OUT ABOUT 4 OR 500 FLAGS EVERY YEAR. MILLS SAYS PLACING THE FLAGS IS HER WAY OF GIVING BACK. SHE HOPES THE NEXT GENERATION CONTINUES THE TRADITION OF REMEMBRANCE LONG AFTER SHE’S GONE.
