French Open Day 3 Women’s Predictions Including Gauff vs Gadecki
The first round of both the men’s and women’s singles will conclude on Day of the French Open. We’ll be treated to 20 women’s matches on Tuesday, and–as always–our writers here at LWOT share their thoughts on all of the matches with you. We split the matches between five articles, with the other four articles featuring Victoria Azarenka vs Yanina Wickmayer, Mirra Andreeva vs Cristina Bucsa, Jessica Pegula vs Anca Todoni, and Sofia Kenin vs Varvara Gracheva. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Damian Kust, and Ilemona Onekutu. Who do you think will reach Round 2?
French Open Day 3 Women’s Predictions
Elise Mertens vs Lois Boisson
Jordan:
Mertens has far more pedigree than Boisson, but this is a dangerous opening round for her. The Frenchwoman strikes the ball powerfully and the conditions at her home event suit her. I still favor Mertens’ consistency more, but it should be a competitive match.
Prediction: Mertens in 3
Damian:
Boisson was such a monster on the ITF Tour last year, securing that Roland Garros wild card and then suffering a season-ending injury just before the tournament. It’s fantastic that she’s back for what she earned now, especially as her form is trending up again. But she’ll need to show something special to beat someone as consistent as Mertens.
Prediction: Mertens in 3
Ilemona:
Lois Boisson’s comeback has been impressive, marked by strong clay-court results and a well-earned wildcard into the Roland-Garros main draw. But facing Elise Mertens in the opening round is a daunting task for the young Frenchwoman. The Belgian’s spotless first-round record this season and her consistency at Majors make her the clear favorite to advance.
Prediction: Mertens in 2
Yulia Putinsteva vs Solana Sierra
Jordan:
2025 has been truly terrible so far for Putintseva, who had a career-best season in 2024. Last year, this would have been a great draw for her, but any match seems tough for the Kazakhstani right now. The favorable matchup might just be enough to get her over the line, but that is nowhere near certain.
Prediction: Putinsteva in 3
Damian:
Last year Putintseva would have had a very nice draw to go on a run had she landed in a section like this, but she just hasn’t been as convincing. After winning just four games against Sramkova in Strasbourg, she needs a quick improvement to defeat the improving Argentinian youngster, Sierra.
Prediction: Putinsteva in 3
Ilemona:
I slightly favor Yulia Putintseva in her Roland-Garros opener against Argentina’s Solana Sierra. The 29-year-old Kazakh brings far more Grand Slam experience, while 20-year-old Sierra is playing just her second Major main draw. Despite Sierra’s strong qualifying run, Putintseva remains the favorite.

Marketa Vondrousova vs Oksana Selekhmeteva
Jordan:
Vondrousova will make her first appearance in three months in this match. She had also missed six months before briefly returning in the opening two months of this season. The Czech will undoubtedly be rusty in this contest, and that presents a unique opportunity for Selekhmeteva to beat a former Grand Slam champion.
Prediction: Selekhmeteva in 2
Damian:
Nobody can take Vondrousova’s achievement away from her, but the fact remains that she keeps getting injured. We haven’t even seen her on the court since Dubai and Selekhmeteva is one of the stronger qualifiers. If she’s fit, the court craft of last year’s quarterfinalist will probably prevail. But that’s just a guessing game at this stage.

Ilemona:
Marketa Vondrousova faces Oksana Selekhmeteva in the French Open first round, returning from a shoulder injury that disrupted her season. Though ranked lower at No. 147, Selekhmeteva comes in with qualifying momentum and could challenge the No. 96-ranked Vondrousova, who may still be shaking off rust.
Prediction: Vondrousova in 3
Coco Gauff vs Olivia Gadecki
Jordan:
On paper, Gauff’s overall draw was the best of any French Open title contender. She starts against a player who does not play her best tennis on clay. The world No. 2 should have no issues here.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
Damian:
Finals in Madrid and Rome were a fantastic lead-up into this tournament for Gauff, who only lost to Swiatek in the previous three editions. With the Pole now in another half and not even playing that well at the moment, she has to be aiming big in Paris this year. Gadecki won’t be able to provide a challenge, at least not on clay.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
Ilemona:
Coco Gauff, the No. 2 seed, opens her 2025 Roland-Garros campaign against Australia’s Olivia Gadecki. Gauff has reached at least the quarterfinals in her last four appearances in Paris and recently made finals in Madrid and Rome. Gadecki, despite a standout run to the Guadalajara final in 2024, has struggled in 2025 with a 5–13 singles record. Given Gauff’s consistent Grand Slam form and Gadecki’s current struggles, the American is heavily favored to advance.
