Pope Leo Will Address Chicagoans Via Video At Sox Park Celebration
ARMOUR SQUARE — Chicagoans attending next month’s celebration of Pope Leo XIV at Rate Field will get to hear from the pontiff of the hour himself.
The Archdiocese of Chicago announced Tuesday that the newly installed Pope Leo will deliver a “special video message to the young people of the world,” to be broadcast first from the June 14 event at the home of the Chicago White Sox, 333 W. 35th St.
First announced last week, the event will feature a Catholic Mass, music, film and in-person testimonials about Pope Leo, who was born on the South Side and is a lifelong White Sox fan.
The event will begin at 2:30 p.m. June 14, with the Mass taking place at 4 p.m. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m., according to the archdiocese. Information on tickets to the event are forthcoming.
The White Sox have also unveiled a graphic installation in honor of Pope Leo on the lower level concourse, near where the pope sat in the stadium during game one of the 2005 World Series between the Sox and the Astros.
