Robert Langdon Series The Secret of Secrets Set At Netflix (Exclusive)
EXCLUSIVE: After a heated bidding war, Netflix has landed an adaptation of The Secret of Secrets, from author Dan Brown and showrunner Carlton Cuse (Lost, Jack Ryan, Locke and Key), with a straight-to-series order in one of the biggest book deals ever. The yet untitled drama is set in the world of Brown’s anticipated mystery thriller novel The Secret of Secrets, the sixth book in his series about Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon.
Brown and Cuse are co-creators, writers and executive producers, with Cuse serving as showrunner. Emma Forman of Cuse’s Genre-Arts also executive produces. Staffing for the series is already underway.
The Secret of Secrets is set for September 9 release by Doubleday. In it, symbologist Robert Langdon races against ancient forces and time to rescue a missing scientist and her groundbreaking manuscript whose discoveries have the power to forever change humanity’s understanding of the mind. The series adaptation will blend futuristic science with mystical lore, delivering on the heart-pounding suspense and international intrigue that has made the Langdon stories a global phenomenon.
In announcing the publish date, Brown called The Secret of Secrets “by far the most intricately plotted and ambitious book that I have ever written, and I also happen to think that it’s the most fun.”
This may explain the eight-year gap between the newest installment and the most recent Robert Langdon novel, the longest in the series, which includes Angels & Demons (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Lost Symbol (2009), Inferno (2013), Origin (2017) and the upcoming The Secret of Secrets (2025). Fueled by the massive worldwide success of The Da Vinci Code, Brown’s novels have sold over 250 million copies in 56 languages.
Three of the novels have been adapted into features starring Tom Hanks as Langdon and directed by Ron Howard, The Da Vinci Code (2006), Angels & Demons (2009) and Inferno (2016), which have grossed combined $2.24 billion worldwide (adjusted in 2025 dollars). A fourth, The Lost Symbol, was turned into a 2021 Peacock series with Ashley Zukerman as a younger version of Langdon. It ran for one season.
Cuse successfully adapted for TV another bestselling series of thriller novels that had spawned a feature franchise, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. He co-created with Graham Roland, executive produced and served as showrunner for the first two seasons of Prime Video’s hit Jack Ryan action drama starring John Krasinski.
At Netflix, the former Lost co-showrunner previously developed and served as writer, director, and showrunner (with Meredith Averill) on Locke & Key, based on the graphic novels by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, and was executive producer/co-showrunner alongside creator Zoe Robyn on the medical drama Pulse. His credits also include co-developing/executive producing A&E’s Bates Motel and Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial, both based on books. Alongside his son, writer Nick Cuse, Carlton Cuse also is developing a Star Wars series for Lucasfilm. He is repped by WME and attorneys Karl Austen and Peter Sample of Jackoway Austen.
Brown is repped by WME, and attorneys Karl Austen and Peter Sample of Jackoway Austen and Heide Lange of Sanford J Greenburger Associates.
This marks the latest high-profile book adaptation for Netflix following such hits as Bridgerton, Queen’s Gambit, The Night Agent and You.
